Arrangements for Children
OVERVIEW
When parents separate, arrangements need to be made for their children.
Where possible, these can be agreed between parents, but sometimes legal support is needed. Whatever your situation, we’re here to help you find the right way forward.
What is a Child Arrangement Order?
A Child Arrangement Order is a legal order made by the court which sets out where a child will live, who they spend time with and how often.
The court’s main focus is the child’s welfare.

When a court order may be needed
You might need a Child Arrangements Order if:
- You can’t agree on where your child should live
- You can’t agree on contact arrangements
- There are disputes around holidays or travel
- There are concerns about a child’s safety or wellbeing
Court is usually a last resort, but it can provide clarity where agreement isn’t possible.
How the court decides
When making a decision, the court follows what’s known as the welfare checklist, which includes:
- The child’s wishes (depending on age and maturity)
- Their emotional and physical needs
- Any risk of harm
- Each parent’s ability to meet those needs
How we can help
We’ll support you in reaching the right arrangements for your child and guide you through the process if court involvement is needed.
- Clarifying parental responsibilities
- Reaching agreements without going to court
- Preparing and submitting applications
- Representing you in court and presenting your case clearly
