Marie Barker

Job Role at Cygnet Law

Marie joined Cygnet Law in 2017 as an Assistant Solicitor. Marie predominantly represents Local Authorities and Children’s Guardians but has also represented parents, grandparents and intervenors in public law proceedings.

Since joining Cygnet, Marie has further extended her advocacy experience, including representing clients in complex, multi-day hearings involving cross examination of expert witnesses, adoption cases and cases involving allegations of serious harm to children.

Notably, Marie has represented an intervenor accused of causing severe bruising to a small baby and the Local Authority in cases whereby allegations of serious sexual and physical abuse were pursued. She has appeared in the high court many times in respect of cases involving deprivations of liberty relating to vulnerable children.

Marie is well known for her robust advocacy, striving to achieve the best possible outcome for her clients.

Awards & Qualification

Marie obtained a 2:1 degree in law in 2002, also winning the Family Law prize awarded by the university. Marie qualified as a solicitor in 2007.

Prior to joining Cygnet in 2017, Marie amassed experience representing a wide range of clients including parents, grandparents, intervenors and Children’s Guardians in both public and private law family proceedings.

Marie qualified as a solicitor in 2007. She has been a member of the Children panel since 2018.

Marie is also now a Qualified Legal Representative, a scheme put in place to ensure that litigants in person are not cross-examined by the perpetrator or alleged perpetrator of their abuse and vice-versa.

Marie's Interests

Marie enjoys eating out at a variety of restaurants trying new cuisines; watching her favourite football team at home games; long country walks with her dog; watching true life dramas and documentaries; and listening to music.
