Understanding County Lines And Why It Matters

County Lines is an issue that continues to affect communities across the UK, especially smaller towns like Middlesbrough, therefore making awareness essential.

County Lines is a form of organised crime where drug gangs expand their operations from larger cities into smaller towns and areas. These gangs use dedicated mobile phone numbers, often referred to as “deal lines”, to take orders and control the distribution of drugs across different locations. The use of these phone lines allows gang leaders to manage operations remotely while reducing their own risk of being caught.

A significant and concerning aspect of County Lines is the exploitation of vulnerable people, particularly children and young people. Gang leaders often target minors because they are easier to manipulate and control. Young people may be pressured, threatened, or groomed into transporting drugs or money. If they are caught by the police, they may only receive a warning on their first offence, which unfortunately makes them even more appealing targets for criminal gangs. This exploitation can have serious long-term consequences for young people, including criminal records, trauma, and increased risk of harm.

Although children are commonly exploited, it is important to recognise that adults are also victims of County Lines activity. Gang leaders may exploit vulnerable adults by forcing or coercing them into allowing their homes to be used to store illegal substances, such as drugs or even firearms. This practice, sometimes known as “cuckooing”, canleave individuals feeling trapped and fearful, often too scared to seek help.

Because Middlesbrough is a smaller town, County Lines activity can have a strong impact on the community. It is vital for professionals, families, and young people to understand the signs of exploitation and to know that those involved are often victims rather than willing participants.
By increasing awareness of County Lines, we can better protect vulnerable individuals, challenge organised crime, and encourage early intervention and support for those at risk. Understanding this issue is a key step keeping our communities safer.
