Understanding Psychological Abuse

At Cygnet Law, we understand that not all abuse leaves physical scars. Psychological abuse is often hidden from sight and can be just as damaging as it is one of the leading contributors to domestic abuse cases. As family law specialists, we see first-hand how emotional manipulation, coercive control, and long-term psychological harm can shape the lives of survivors.

The Reality Behind the Abuse
According to SafeLives’ Psychological Violence report, nearly 90% of survivors of domestic abuse also experience psychological abuse — ranging from gaslighting and threats, to isolation and degrading language. For many, this form of abuse is the most enduring and difficult to explain, especially when there are no visible injuries to show.

  • One striking statistic from the report reveals that:
86% of survivors felt that psychological abuse had a more lasting impact on them than physical violence.
  • Over 60% of those affected said it took them longer to even recognise the abuse for what it was.

This underscores a painful truth: psychological violence often goes unnoticed — even by the people living through it.

You’re Not Alone!
No one should have to face abuse in silence. At Cygnet Law, we believe that everyone deserves to be heard, supported, and protected. There are protective Orders in place to assist with your
protection from abuse, such as Non-Molestation Orders, and a more recent Order called Domestic Abuse Protection Orders.

Whether you’re navigating a separation, seeking protection for your children, or simply need someone to talk to about what you’re going through, WE ARE HERE.

You might not feel ready to take the first step alone, and that’s okay. Sometimes, it makes all the difference to have someone by your side — someone who understands the legal, emotional, and
practical complexities of these situations.

What You Can Do

  • Talk to someone you trust — a friend, a support worker, or a legal professional.
  • Reach out for help — our team at Cygnet is trained to handle sensitive situations with compassion and confidentiality.
  • Know your rights — psychological abuse is recognised in UK law under coercive and controlling behaviour offences.

Come to Cygnet
Psychological abuse is real. It is harmful. And it matters.

If you’re reading this and recognise the signs in your own life or someone you love — please know you’re not alone. At Cygnet, we stand with survivors every step of the way. Whether you’re ready to act or just want to talk, our doors are open.
