HOW GIFTS IN WILLS HELP CANCER RESEARCH

Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia is a type of blood cancer most often diagnosed in children and young people. Many people with this disease do survive, but successful treatment depends on predicting the risk of the cancer coming back and planning treatment based on this risk.

In Newcastle, Professor Anthony Moorman developed a more precise mathematical method for determining a person’s risk of the disease returning. This method is being used as part of a clinical trial to help guide doctor’s treatment decisions. People with a higher risk are given more treatment while saving others from unnecessary treatment and the associated side effects.

This research could lead to children and young people getting personalised treatment for this blood cancer, improving survival and having a huge impact on quality of life.
